LEWISTON – A head-on crash of snowmobiles in the middle of No Name Pond late Tuesday night left two men injured, one seriously, officials said.

The injured men, who were among a party of four snowmobilers riding separate sleds, were not immediately identified. One of the four sleds apparently turned in front of another, officials said, and they collided head-on.

One man suffered a broken arm and possible broken collar bone, as well as cuts; the other had a spinal injury, rescuers said. The two men were described as being in their late 30s or early 40s.

Each was put in a litter basket and hauled, one-by-one, behind a snowmobile from the center of the lake to the landing on No Name Pond Road about a half-mile away. They were taken to Central Maine Medical Center.

The Maine Warden Service, United Ambulance, Sabattus police and Lewiston police and fire personnel were called to the scene.
