LEWISTON – A small section of the downtown area was in the dark Tuesday night after a malfunction in an underground power line that could take days to fix.

Streetlights were out in a two-block area around the downtown parking garage, affecting short stretches of Park, Oak, Bates and Ash streets.

The outage did not affect businesses in the area, and there are no homes in the small square where the lights remained out, police said.

The parking garage, between Oak, Park, Bates and Ash streets, remained fully illuminated while the streetlights around it were out.

Public works crews said it may be two days before they can dig up the faulty line and make repairs. Police said there were no problems Tuesday night as a result of the outage and none are expected.

Most areas where streetlights were out received illumination from nearby streets or from the garage.
