AUBURN – Lewiston/Auburn Community Little Theatre will hold auditions for “I Hate Hamlet” at 7 p.m. March 20 and 22 at the Great Falls Performing Arts Center on Academy Street.

Linda Britt is directing the show to be staged in June.

“I Hate Hamlet” is an ensemble piece by Paul Rudnick that requires great comic timing from three women and three men.

Andrew Rally, Hollywood actor, moves to New York after his TV series, a medical drama, is canceled. His agent, Lillian, convinces him to play Hamlet in Central Park, which makes his virginal girlfriend swoon but befuddles his producer. Matters get complicated when real estate agent Felicia finds the perfect apartment for Andrew, and he ends up sharing the space with the ghost of John Barrymore, known as the greatest Hamlet ever.

The roles follow:

n Barrymore (or rather, his ghost). Rudnick says he should be played with a “wicked, bounding glee.” He needs to be agile because there is swordplay involved.

n Andrew Rally, Hollywood actor, 30ish. While at first glance he seems to be a shallow, Hollywood type, Andrew must hold his own with Barrymore, growing into the role of Hamlet, possessing his own potent charm.

n Deirdre McDavey, Andrew’s 29-year-old virginal girlfriend. She must be delightfully romantic. She must overact yet be convincing.

n Gary Peter Lefkowitz, writer/director/producer, 40ish, is all Hollywood.

n Lillian Troy, Andrew’s agent, 70s. She had a romance back when with a much younger Barrymore. She is mysterious and elegant and tough and vulnerable. She’s supposed to be German.

n Felicia Dantine, real estate agent, 40s. Very New York, she has “an almost carnal passion” for Manhattan apartments. She conducts seances and communicates regularly with her dead mother.
