Editor’s note: The following three synopses of books were provided by the respective publishing companies:
“A Century Apart: Maine Then & Now,” by Cindy McIntyre of Waldoboro; Down East Books; hardcover, 144 pages, 106 color reproductions, 73 sepia-toned photos, $28.
Photographer Cindy McIntyre takes readers on an armchair tour of 53 Maine cities, towns, villages and lighthouses in “A Century Apart: Maine Then & Now,” comparing antique post card views from “way back then” with the same views as seen now.
In the course of her business selling high-quality photographic prints, McIntyre discovered that some of her best-selling framed prints are ones that pair “then and now” images – an antique post card scene and a modern-day photo taken from exactly the same spot.
Her collection of particularly interesting vintage post cards grew, as did her collection of historical information about those places.
The result is “A Century Apart: Maine Then & Now,” a glimpse at how much has remained the same – and in some cases how much has changed – throughout Maine. Information is included on each location and its history, the names of buildings and businesses old and new, and what each place is known for today.
The book’s introduction describes the golden age of picture post cards in the early 1900s (in 1913, 900 million post cards were mailed in the United States), the changes in photographic technology and McIntyre’s own experiences while researching this book.
Before moving to Maine, McIntyre was an award-winning photojournalist for a weekly Seattle newspaper.
Now a Waldoboro resident, she creates and sells hand-colored photo prints at craft shows. Her previous photographic books are “Seattle, Tacoma, and the Puget Sound Region,” 1987; and “Tacoma,” 1988.
She was principal author and photographer of “The Great Eastern Mussel Cookbook,” 1995. Her photographs have appeared in hundreds of publications through stock photography agencies.
