JAY – Today, the School Committee is scheduled to discuss postponing teacher workshop days and to consider what to do about the graduation date.

With the graduation now set at June 5, seniors would be short five required-instructional days because of school cancellations due to storms.

The special School Committee meeting will follow a joint meeting to review the municipal audit with selectmen.

That meeting will include School and Budget Committee members, the town’s financial directors and town auditor Ron Smith of RHR Smith & Co.

The audit review starts at 6 p.m. in the Middle School cafeteria.

“The audit is excellent,” Town Manager Ruth Marden said. “The town of Jay is in excellent condition. This meeting is an opportunity for selectmen, School Committee and Budget Committee as well as the public to ask the auditor questions so they can have a clearer understanding of the audit.”

Following that meeting, School Committee members are scheduled to move upstairs to the school library for their meeting.

Superintendent Robert Wall is recommending approval to postpone teacher workshop days on Friday, March 25, and Friday, June 17, to Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21.

At present, students aren’t scheduled to attend school this Friday, but if the board approves the postponement, students would be required to attend that day.

Another dilemma the board is facing is the scheduled graduation date of Sunday, June 5.

Seniors are required to have 170 instructional days and they would be short five days.

That would drop to four days, if the board approves the March 25 as a student day.

The board will discuss several options, including deciding if the school fits the criteria to apply for a state waiver of the required days or moving graduation to June 12, Wall said.

The senior class has put down a deposit on a Scotia Prince cruise for Project Graduation following graduation and some relatives from out of state have already made plans to attend graduation.
