LEWISTON – Donald J. Leaver of Jesse Road, Topsham, passed away on Saturday, March 19, at Central Maine Medical Center, following a short hospitalization. He was supported by family, friends, clergy and caring staff.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1920, in Providence, R.I. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the U.S. Army with the 75th Troop Carrier Squadron, and was employed for 35 years at Universal Optical in Providence.

Serving his community well, he was a Scout leader and coached Little League baseball and in later years, soccer. He attended all his grandchildren’s swim meets, track meets, and baseball, soccer and basketball games, as well as concerts and performances. He encouraged and inspired us all to do our best.

He is survived by five very grateful sons, Robert of Providence, R.I., Don and Dennis of Topsham, David of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., and Wayne of Cathedral City, Calif.; “Grampy” loved his 11 grandchildren; four adopted daughters; and Bill.

He was predeceased by his bride of 51 years, Rose Leaver. “Grampy,” to all who knew him and loved him, shared his life, love and example with us for 84 years.
