I’m writing to comment on the couple from Hallowell who adopted the pit bull Amber.

I don’t know how anyone could hit two dogs, kill one and leave the other badly hurt. That is so heartless.

Animals are just like kids, they breathe and have a beating heart. I commend the couple for having the courage to stop for Amber, take her to a vet and adopt her. It was nice to read in the Sun Journal, March 7, that their dog mothered Amber and that the local pet stores and friends helped pay for the vet bill. There ought to be more people out there for the animals.

I myself have five dogs – three of them are pit bulls that were abused – that I adopted from shelters. They are such wonderful, loyal dogs if treated right. They have such a bad reputations, which is sad. It’s the owners, not the dogs. Any dog can be vicious. I wouldn’t give up mine for the world.

Pit bulls end up in shelters and get euthanized because no one wants them. They are not given a chance for a good life. Some shelters don’t take them or adopt them out. My dream has always been to open a shelter just for pit bulls, knowing they are harder to adopt.

I think there ought to be stricter laws on animal abuse. Treat it like a child abuse case and give the stiffest penalty possible. Someone has to look out for the well being of the animals.
