Buckfield Junior/Senior High School’s tiny, self-funded drama group did not win a spot in the state drama finals. But members did earn individual awards for acting and prop design.
“Everyone got a lot of praise, which I think meant as much to them as anything,” said drama coach Judi Weeks.
More than 70 high schools competed in the 2005 Maine Drama Festival Regionals over the weekend. Sixteen schools won their regional contests and will go on to the statewide competition this weekend.
Gray-New Gloucester High School won regionals and will go to the state finals for its play “The Farnsdale Housing Estate.” Livermore Falls High School will go to state finals with its play “The Secret Lives of Subway Riders.”
Edward Little High School in Auburn won an alternate spot with its play, “Our Rotten Town.”
Individual winners in Buckfield’s play, “Soap Opera,” included student director Cheryl Powers and actress Krissy Barker, who won awards for excellence. The entire drama team, which had never used sets or major props before this year, won an award for its crawling baby special effect.
“Soap Opera” is a 30-minute comedy about a repairman who falls in love with a washing machine.
