POLAND – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education’s program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and General Educational Development testing.

Call the adult education office at 345-3217 for more information about the classes and for classes that are offered at Minot Consolidated School.

Other classes are as follows:

“Keeping Peace at Home”: Take the class to learn a range of conflict management skills and strategies, from problem-solving to family meetings to anger management, that are designed to promote respect, cooperation and successful communication. Thursday, Mar. 31, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

A minimum of six people is needed. Registration is $5/$6, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident.

“CPR Heart Saver Course”: The American Heart Association course is designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on adults, children and infants. There will be slides on child and infant safety, basic anatomy and physiology, heart disease, risk factors, heart attacks and strokes. Practical skills will be performed on mannequins to learn CPR and rescue breathing. Monday, April 4, 6 to 9:30 p.m. A minimum of three is needed. Registration is $35/$40.

“Short Short Workshop on Short Short Fiction”: Short shorts, also known as “Flash Fiction,” “Sudden Fiction” or “Postcard Fiction” are stories that evolved to survive the hectic pace of readers’ lives and the smaller publishing slots available, especially on the Internet. In the fifth in a series of writing workshops, students will use classic and contemporary stories as models for their work. They will spend three weeks of class time writing, reading and critiquing one another’s work. April 7, 14, 28 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is $25/$30. A minimum of five writers is needed.

“Keeping Our Minds Sharp as We Age”: The Maine Alzheimer’s Association will provide specific strategies to help maintain brainpower despite the passage of time. The program will also explain when memory loss can be the symptom of a more serious condition. Those who cannot attend the free session, but would like to receive information should call the Maine Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-660-2871. Tuesday, April 12, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A minimum of five people is needed.

“Container Gardening”: Participants may make a window box or fill a container with spring and/or summer flowers. Bring a container (up to 24 inches) or purchase a window box. Plants, soil, fertilizer and expertise will be provided. Thursday, May 19, 6 to 8 p.m. Registration is $6/$7 due by May 9. A minimum of six is needed. Lab fee of $20 paid to instructor.
