PORTLAND – Muriel Covell Wilson, 92, a resident of South Freeport, died Friday, March 18, at Mercy Hospital in Portland, following a short illness.

She was born in Wells, Feb. 1, 1913, the daughter of Henry and Eva Covell. She graduated from Willimantic High School in Connecticut in 1930, and from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1934.

In 1964, she obtained her M.S.W. from Boston University. Following her undergraduate graduation, she worked as a social worker for the state until her marriage to Ralph Wilson, in 1941. She lived in Yarmouth with her family for 25 years and was active in the development of the Yarmouth Health Council. She attended the First Parish Congregational Church.

After the births of her four children, she returned to work as a social worker for the state. Named social worker of the year in 1977, she participated in the founding of Freeport Community Services, an organization she contributed to for 30 years.

She was a past president of the Freeport Community Services and member of the United Church of Christ, South Freeport, since 1967. She was also a past member of NASW, University of Maine Alumni Association, American Public Welfare Organization, International Conference on Social Work, Foster Parent Association and member of The Maine Conference of Human Services. A lifetime gardener, her other passions, after her family, included sewing, birds, traveling, reading, craft work, nature and the opera.

She is survived by her four children, Allan Wilson and his wife, Joyce, of Suffield, Conn., Scott Wilson of Yarmouth, Mark Wilson and his wife, Sandra, of Yarmouth, and daughter, Sue Ann Randall of South Freeport. Her love of family extended to her seven grandchildren and great-grandchild, the source of tremendous pride to her, Sara Randall of San Francisco, Calif., Rebecca Randall of South Freeport, Jennifer Wilson of Boston, Mass., Courtney Wilson Nixon and husband, Jonathan, and daughter Maren, of Wells, Meredith Wilson of Boston, Mass., Aaron Wilson and wife, Nicole, of North Yarmouth and Brett Wilson of Charlottesville, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Mildred Covell of Greene; two brothers, Robert Covell and wife, Elaine, of Bangor and Waldo Covell and wife, Janet, of Waterville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph in 1996; and by a sister, Pricilla Covell Onidi in 2003.
