I have no objection to those gathering signatures to petition for a future ballot item, unless there is a “like” measure already on the ballot for that day’s balloting. To do so unfairly prejudices the approved ballot measure and taints the results. Maine has permitted this practice and must stop it. We don’t want to be associated with the election practices in Florida or Ohio. I would think we are above that.

I also disapprove of campaigning on the grounds of the polling place. While it may be courteous for incumbents and hopefuls to shake hands with the public, if that were done in a court of law, it would be called jury tampering, which I know we hold with deep disdain.
