FARMINGTON – The Rev. Roger Chabot was frightened awake early Tuesday morning by an intruder in his church.

Chabot lives in an apartment attached to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on Middle Street. According to Farmington police Detective Marc Bowering, Chabot was awakened when the burglar entered his sleeping quarters at about 4 a.m. The unwelcome visitor fled when he was surprised to find the priest asleep there.

Officer Andrew Hufnagel made the initial investigation. According to Bowering, the intruder rifled through several areas of the church and absconded with a small amount of cash. Nothing else appears to have been stolen and no damage was sustained in the incident. The clergyman was shaken but not injured.

Police collected evidence that will be sent to the state crime lab this week, said Bowering. There are no suspects at this time and it is unknown if the intruder was male or female.
