There seems to be a trend among some groups to want to label politicians based on their position on issues. Take, for instance, the recent “need” for the Christian Civic League to assign such labels. My response to their questions earned me the label “pro-family.” If my responses had been different, I would have earned the label “pro-homosexual.”

I regret that the league has, once again, wandered into this territory. One might conclude that a “pro-homosexual” legislator is “anti-family” and that the “pro-family” legislator is “anti-homosexual” or a “bigot.” I would insist that these conclusions are just not true.

For instance, my position regarding the governor’s “Gay Rights” bill is that I will be voting against it because (and here comes the important part) I believe that since the voters have exercised their “citizens veto” on similar legislation in the past, that any effort to put this forward should, again, be placed on the ballot for their approval.

If that provision were to appear on the governor’s bill, I would vote in favor of its passage. So what label have I earned now? I would hope, if you feel you must assign a label, that it be “fair and reasonable.”

The Christian Civic League should be setting a higher standard for us all. It is unfortunate that they have, instead, diminished the standard by which we treat one another. We all deserve better.
