MEXICO – Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice is offering a six-week exercise program called “Moving Freely” from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting April 4 at the Mexico Recreation Center gym, Recreation Drive.

Instructor will be Louise Stickney. Suggested donation for participants is $5 for the six-week program. To preregister, call Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice at 1-800-482-7412, ext. 1404.

Although designed for senior citizens, men and women of all ages are welcome to attend the classes.

The goal is to help participants to achieve and maintain independent lives by incorporating movement into their daily routine. Research has shown that regular exercise for people of all ages enhances the quality of life and provides other health benefits. Research has also shown that it is never too late to begin an exercise program.

“Moving Freely” will offer exercises that are safe, simple and effective. Participants learn why the exercises are necessary, what they do for the body and mind and how to incorporate them into their daily lives.

The exercises are designed to achieve the full range of movement in all body parts to develop flexibility, agility, coordination, balance and strength.

Music, foam balls, wooden wands, elastic ropes, beanbag hand weights and parachute play provide interest, motivation, challenge and fun. Emphasis is placed on developing a walking “habit,” which participants are encouraged to continue after the six-week program has ended.
