LISBON – Shannon Welsh, superintendent of School Union 30, Durham and Lisbon, one of three finalists interviewed to be superintendent in Cape Elizabeth, will remain at Union 30.

The Cape Elizabeth School Committee has selected Alan Hawkins, superintendent at Wiscasset, as its new superintendent.

The third finalist, Denison Galaudet, superintendent at Richmond, withdrew his name from consideration minutes before the School Committee met to make its decision, a Cape Elizabeth School Department spokesman said.

Welsh has another year to go on her contract with Union 30, which is expected to be renegotiated at that time, Durham School Committee Chairman Jane Blais said.

At the time she informed Union 30 that she was a finalist for the Cape Elizabeth position, Welsh assured members of the Union 30 School Committee that she submitted her application to Cape Elizabeth “not because of any issues related to Durham or Lisbon, but because of the opportunities provided by the position,” and assured them that she “had not applied for and am not considering any other openings.” Efforts to contact Welsh for comment Thursday were unsuccessful and she was not expected back in her office until Monday, an office spokesman said.
