TURNER – The potters will pot, the musicians will play and the performers will put on a show Thursday night at the annual Arts Gala at Leavitt Area High School.

If last year’s attendance level is repeated, more than 1,000 people will turn out to experience more than a dozen art forms, from poetry in the coffeehouse to music slams and mimes in the hallways.

Arts week begins at Leavitt on Monday and culminates in the gala for the community. During the week, students will have the opportunity to learn from and interact with more than a dozen artists from various disciplines.

“We have invited professional artists from around the state to integrate their specialty with the classroom teachers,” art teacher Jonathan Mess said. “This is a great opportunity for teachers to see how the arts can be integrated into what they teach.”

The visiting artists will spend Wednesday and Thursday with students in areas such as filmmaking, poetry, dance and mime as well as improvisational dance and comedy.

Thursday night will be the culmination of the weeklong efforts and long-term projects. Art will be exhibited on hallway walls, and there will be music and dance performances, a poetry slam, a pottery-throwing contest, sidewalk artists and food.

The gala begins at 6 p.m. and the community members are encouraged to attend.

“Come and see why our art students are a cultural force here at Leavitt,” Mess said.
