We are so blessed to have such a great river flow through our community. Stories from the past remind us of how badly the Androscoggin was mistreated. We all need to work harder toward improving the water quality of this gem of a river – the sooner, the better. No excuses, no delays.

The greatest percentage of our bodies is water. We cannot drink polluted water or eat poisoned food and survive. So why do our political leaders deem it permissible for certain groups, individuals, communities or corporations to dispose of waste into such a noble river? The Androscoggin is of greater value to our community and state as a clean river, not a dirty one.

If you read the fishing regulations booklet issued to purchasers of a Maine fishing license, you’ll find a warning about eating fish from the Androscoggin. Pregnant women should eat none. This is shameful. Of greater shame would be to turn our backs toward the river and say, “well, it’s not a bad as it used to be.”

Let’s clean her up and then we can say, “Welcome to Maine, the way life should be” and believe it.
