The search for Bobby Fischer has been over for some time. Now, there’s a country that wants him for something besides prosecution.

The former world champion chess player has been granted citizenship by Iceland and his long years on the run have ended.

Fischer has been jailed in Japan since last July, waiting for deportation to the United States where he was facing more jail time and fines for violating sanctions by playing a 1992 chess match in Yugoslavia.

After playing, Fischer collected $3 million and disappeared.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Fischer is a malevolent kook. After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, Fischer said the country deserved it. He said he would like to see the country wiped out. And has said recently that the United States is illegitimate.

His opinions are as offensive as his chess play was brilliant. He’s found a place that wants him, and his crimes of playing chess in Yugoslavia are more than a decade old. He’s been on the run and spent almost a year in jail.

The U.S. government should give up its pursuit of this quasi-fugitive and let him become just a chess champion. Not another moment or dollar should be wasted on him.
