PORTLAND – Richard D. Smith, 70, a resident of Franklin Road, Jay, died suddenly Friday, March 25, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born Aug. 29, 1934, in Jay, the son of Donovan and Gertrude (Dearborn) Smith. He graduated from Jay High School in 1951.
He married Maryrose Litalien on April 8, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Livermore Falls.
For most of his life, he worked at International Paper Co., in Jay, retiring in 1985.
He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church.
He was a member of the Quarter Century of International Paper Co., American Legion, an active member of the AmVets, serving as chaplain for the organization and worked for the Special Olympics in Jay and the surrounding communities.
He enjoyed feeding the birds and the squirrels, camping, deer and turkey hunting, cooking, history, snowmobiling and woodworking.
He was a jack-of-all-trades, and would leave his own things in order to help other people.
He was a very devoted husband and father and will be sadly missed by those that knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Maryrose, of Jay; three daughters, Rosemary Ramsdell of Jay, Donna Daigel and her husband, Donald, of Hartford and Susan Sapiel and her husband, Wayne, of Jay; two sons, Roland and his wife, Lorena, of Jay and Michael Smith and his companion, Candace Hall, of East Livermore; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Theodore Smith.
