PORTLAND – Richard D. Smith, 70, a resident of Franklin Road, Jay, died suddenly Friday, March 25, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1934, in Jay, the son of Donovan and Gertrude (Dearborn) Smith. He graduated from Jay High School in 1951.

He married Maryrose Litalien, on April 8, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Livermore Falls.

For most of his life, he worked at International Paper Co. in Jay, retiring in 1985.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, and member of the following organizations: 25 years at International Paper Co., American Legion, and was a very active member of the AmVets, serving as chaplain for the organization. He also worked for Special Olympics in Jay and the surrounding communities.

He enjoyed feeding the birds and the squirrels, camping, deer and turkey hunting, cooking, history, snowmobiling and woodworking. He was a jack of all trades and he would leave his own things to go help other people. He was a very devoted husband and father and will be sadly missed by those that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Maryrose, of Jay; three daughters, Rosemary Ramsdell of Jay, Donna Daigel and her husband, Donald, of Hartford, and Susan Sapiel and her husband, Wayne, of Jay; two sons, Roland and his wife, Lorena, of Jay, and Michael Smith and his companion, Candace Hall, of East Livermore; two brothers, David Smith and his wife, Bernice, of Windham and Douglas Smith and his wife, Angela, of Jay; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Theodore Smith.
