The Sun Journal on March 20 carried a letter to the editor that had to do with the religious issue of “salvation by faith alone.” The letter cites columnist Cal Thomas as contending, “The Ten Commandments being uniquely Jewish,’ don’t pertain to Christians.”
The Ten Commandments are also uniquely biblical. The Bible is a Christian book. Christians are not authorized to pick and choose portions of the Bible they feel pertain to them.
“Salvation by faith alone” certainly receives emphasis among Protestants. However, faith is not an idea we have in our heads. To have faith or belief in Christ is to struggle to receive into ourselves the qualities and characteristics that were true of Christ. We are saved by faith in the sacrificial work of Christ. This does not mean that we are free to stumble on in our self-indulgent, self-destructive lifestyles.
Followers of Christ also submit themselves to a “sanctifying,” renewing work of Holy Spirit.
