FARMINGTON – Police searching a vehicle parked in the Mt. Blue High School parking lot March 25 discovered a firearm under the seat, according to Farmington Police Chief Richard Caton III.

Police believe the gun had been placed there by a family member of the New Vineyard student who drove the car to school.

The school initiated the investigation, which was unrelated to the gun, said Caton. He didn’t say what prompted the search.

Officials at the school were unavailable for comment Friday.

The .25-caliber handgun was found under a seat unloaded. It was unclear if the student knew that the gun was in the vehicle.

No charges had been filed Friday, but the district attorney’s office will be reviewing the case, Caton said.
