In response to the March 26 article “Highway budget calls for automatic gas tax hikes,” I feel those tax hikes are justified in the budget as long as revenue actually goes to road repair and improvements. The only problem with the money going to the general fund is it can be used for many things besides its intended purpose.

I don’t mind taxes following inflation, but the governor also seems to want to hit us with a bunch of user fees and fines. That is an easy way to make more money for the state as few people really pay attention to these tactics.

Propose hiking property taxes or any other taxes and everybody gets involved. Raise user fees and fines but not taxes? Why couldn’t the governor spend more of his time trying to bring business to Maine and stop spending his energy with creative ways of taking the taxpayers’ money?

Soon everyone will have to pay some type of user fee just to walk on the sidewalk.
