BOSTON (AP) – The son of Bruins legend Ray Bourque is leaving Boston University after one season to play junior hockey in Canada.

Chris Bourque, 19, is expected to play for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior League, the team said Tuesday.

BU spokesman Pete Charbonneau confirmed Monday that Bourque was leaving the school, but referred further questions to coach Jack Parker, who did not immediately return calls on Monday.

Bourque was named to the Hockey East all-rookie team after recording 10 goals and 13 assists in 35 games. He was MVP of the Beanpot tournament after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against Northeastern in the title game.

The 5-foot-8, 175-pound forward was a second-round pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL draft.

Bourque’s agent, Steve Kasper, was meeting with Moncton director of hockey operations Allan Power on Monday in Montreal, team spokesman Greg Turner said.

Ray Bourque, a native of Quebec, also played in the QMJL before he was drafted by the Bruins. He was a five-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s best defenseman and spent 20-plus seasons in Boston before capping his career by winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2001.
