FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – Wide receiver David Terrell has signed with the New England Patriots, reuniting quarterback Tom Brady with a former college teammate.

The addition of the eighth player drafted in 2001 is the latest move as the Super Bowl champs revamp their receiving corps.

They previously signed Tim Dwight, who played last year with San Diego, and released Troy Brown and David Patten.

Terrell left Michigan after his junior season and hasn’t lived up to expectations since being drafted by the Chicago Bears.

While Brady, a sixth-round pick in 2000, is a two-time Super Bowl MVP with three NFL championships, Terrell has struggled.

In four seasons with Chicago, he totaled 128 receptions for 1,602 yards receiving and nine touchdowns.

He was released on Feb. 28 with one year, worth $925,000, left on his contract after the Bears signed wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who had been with Carolina.

Terrell started 15 of 16 games for the Bears last year, leading the team with a career-high 699 receiving yards. His 42 receptions were second on the team. He joins a receiving corps led by Deion Branch, the MVP of this year’s Super Bowl, and David Givens.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

He will have to get used to the Patriots team-oriented style of play without excessive on-field celebrations

Terrell has hopped a fence and punted the ball toward the stands after scoring a touchdown in the 2002 season opener. In last year’s opener, he was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when, after catching a pass, he flipped the ball to a Detroit Lions player on the sideline.

He also had difficulties off the field, pleading guilty earlier this month to negligent driving. Terrell was charged after Chicago police stopped him Nov. 16, claiming he was driving his SUV erratically.

He joins a receiving corps led by Deion Branch, the MVP of this year’s Super Bowl, and David Givens.

Branch, limited by injury to nine games last season, had 35 catches for 454 yards and four touchdowns. Givens led the team with 56 catches for 874 yards and three touchdowns.

The departure of Patten, who had 44 catches, and Brown, who finished with 17 and also was a backup defensive back, could create an opportunity for Bethel Johnson.

Johnson was primarily a kick returner in his first two seasons and had only 10 catches last year.

Dwight signed a one-year contract on March 13 after being released by the Chargers on Feb. 22 following four injury-marred seasons. He had two catches for 31 yards last year when he was hampered by toe and hamstring injuries. He also returned 50 kickoffs.
