KINGFIELD – Trustees of the Kingfield Water District decided Monday night to apply for a wellhead protection grant from the state.

The district is seeking funds from the Department of Health and Human Services for educational materials and programs. The goal is to show water conservation techniques to Kingfield residents.

Trustees voted to accept Stratex LLC of Portland as the district’s consulting firm on issues arising from the possible use of Kingfield water by Poland Spring. Board member Joseph Ray wondered if the water district should get “a second opinion” before choosing a consultant, noting that since Poland Spring has agreed to pay for consulting costs, accepting Stratex might “look like an inside job.” Chairman Bob Barnes noted that the fact that Kingfield has worked with Stratex in the past should ameliorate any residents’ fears.

Trustees also decided to change the start of Drinking Water Week from June 6 to July 21 so that the water awareness program will coincide with Kingfield Days.
