As a member of Maine’s younger generation, I must say that I am very disappointed with members of the state Legislature and the governor by their passing of the state budget.
Over the past years, Maine has developed a massive spending problem, giving large quantities of Maine’s revenues to useless governmental positions as well as needless government-funded programs, such as Medicaid, that have had little impact on the quality of living for the majority of Maine citizens.
It is this extraneous spending that has led Maine to its current debt level. By borrowing $447 million and not altering any spending regulations, we are going to fall deeper and deeper into debt, making the already gigantic loan even greater.
With college sitting on my shoulders, my loans are about to grow in size. With payments waiting around the corner, I don’t want to worry about the state’s debts. Nobody should.
Let’s control this debt now by controlling spending by the state. We have to start cutting something if we’re ever going to get anywhere.
