AUGUSTA (AP) – More than a year after voters rejected a proposal for a $650 million Indian casino in Sanford, the Passamaquoddy Tribe is working on a plan to develop a new harness racing track with slot machines in eastern Maine.
The tribe, which is working on the plan in conjunction with Washington County legislators, has no specific location for the racino, but supporters mentioned Calais as one possibility, the Portland Press Herald reported. The track’s racing dates would likely be in late fall and early spring, when other Maine tracks are closed.
Supporters of the proposal said the track would likely have racing in late fall and early spring, when other tracks in Maine are closed.
The proposed racino, which would contain as many as 1,500 slot machines, would require the approval of Gov. John Baldacci and the Legislature. At present, the only track where slots are allowed is Bangor Raceway, where a racino is set to open next year.
“We don’t believe the people of Maine are opposed to Indian gaming. We believe the people of Maine are opposed to a mega-casino in southern Maine,” said Frederick J. Moore III, Passamaquoddy tribal representative.
