I find it interesting that Gov. Baldacci is willing to trust the pharmaceutical expertise of the average citizen when it comes to a referendum about the medicinal use of marijuana, but then not trust those same voters when it comes to his pet project, the gay rights package.
I would like to ask these politicians, as they disregard the will of “we the people,” if they have any respect at all for us?
I believe I know the answer.
Do they have a plan to protect the employers and landlords who fire or evict people, who happen to be gay, for perfectly legitimate reasons from frivolous lawsuits? Do they suggest that this special rights package will not create a de facto homosexual tenure program? Do they think that this will not create an atmosphere where people are afraid to fire or evict people for fear of litigation?
Note the irony as a gay state representative tells us how gays are routinely discriminated against in Maine. I guess if we ended the supposed institutional discrimination, he would be a senator?
As for the media’s treatment of this special interest package, I do believe that it took more than the Christian Civic League to reject this in referendum twice, but I wouldn’t let the facts get in the way of a good Christian-bashing story.
