Some of the early farmers have already planted peas. Said an out of town farmer who was in the city yesterday: “While the season is not particularly early from the farmer’s point of view, yet we are all surprised at the sudden change of conditions which a few weeks ago threatened to make the season at least three weeks later than usual. I predict that in most localities the spring’s planting will begun in real earnest by the middle of this month if not before.

There is said to be but very little frost remaining on the ground, and as soon as the roads become dry from the recent rain, the automobilists expect to be able to enjoy spins over country roads.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The Boston and Maine Railroad’s Diesel streamliner, once known as the “Flying Yankee” will return to service between Boston and Portland effective Monday, April 25, as the week-day train, “Businessman.” The change from the present Budd car equipment to the larger seating capacity of the streamliner represents a major improvement in train service between Portland and Boston effective April 24 with Daylight Saving Time and continuing until Oct. 30.

Initial work on construction of toll gates in the Lewiston-Auburn area to serve the extension of the Maine Turnpike probably will commence in two or three weeks. At the same time the official renewed previous statements that present estimates indicate the 55-mile extension between Portland and Augusta will be completed by Oct. 1.
