The concept of “New Beginnings” is a good one. It is a worthwhile cause. However, I am opposed to the proposed location on Oak Street and McClellan Road in West Farmington.
My family has lived in the same home in West Farmington for several generations. Over the years, we have experienced disturbing trends that have deeply affected our way of life. Neighbors used to consist of families living in single-family homes. Now our security and peace of mind has been lost because of the party houses that surround us.
The reality of the “New Beginnings” project is this. It is proposed that an apartment building be built on the corner of McClellan Road and Oak Street. McClellan Road is a poorly maintained, “2 rod road.” Drainage problems exist. Crowded apartment buildings make for dangerous access and parking problems. It is not well-suited for more traffic.
Police reports reflect multiple occurrences of disruptive late-night parties in apartment buildings that abut this proposed location. Alcohol and cigarettes are readily available at an adjacent store. This is not a suitable location to house troubled young adults without on-site supervision.
It seems in this town surely there could be a more appropriate location suited to the healing environment needed by broken and injured youth. Should we not give them a better opportunity in an area not destined to their failure? Let them have a fair shot at a true “New Beginning” in a better environment.
