OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Ruth M. Auger, 81, of Oxford, formerly of Old Orchard Beach and Lewiston, died at Ledgeview Nursing Care Center in West Paris, Thursday, April 7.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1923, a daughter of Michael and Celina Rouselle Martin. She was educated in Old Orchard Beach schools and graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1941. While in high school, she was a member of the basketball team.

She was the widow of Philip L. Auger. He died in 1986.

She and her late husband resided in Old Orchard Beach until 1970 when they moved to Lewiston. In 1982, they began spending the winter months in Jensen Beach, Fla. In 2001, she moved to Oxford with her son, Damian, and his family, due to failing health.

While living in Old Orchard Beach, she was employed by the former Saco-Lowell Shops in Biddeford, the Old Orchard Beach School System hot lunch program, and the former Beach Pharmacy.

She was an active member of St. Margaret’s Parish, a member of the parish’s former Ladies Sodality, and a member of the Rev. James J. Mullen Council Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She also served as chairperson of the Annual March of Dimes Drive for several years and was also a member of Holy Family Parish.

In Lewiston, she was employed for several years as the manager of the operating rooms at Central Maine Medical Center.

She enjoyed walking on the beach, playing cards, and in her younger years, dancing on the Pier during the Great Band Era.

She is survived by two sons, Marc T. Auger of Lyman, and Damian D. Auger of Oxford; a daughter, Mrs. Sandra S. Denniston of Naples; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
