LEWISTON – The University of Southern Maine at Lewiston-Auburn College will host a Family Fun Day and Spring Carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 16. All area families with young children are encouraged to attend.

The special day is sponsored by the USM/L-A Healthy Learners Program, which is a preventive counseling program available to children in the Auburn School Department primary grades.

In addition to a variety of fun activities, families will be given demonstrations of the Healthy Learners Program, occupational therapy students will conduct a “backpack awareness” training, and a number of professionals who provide services to families and young children will be on hand to share information and answer questions.

Those interested in attending, including local early childhood professionals, are asked to call Dr. Robert Baskett at 753-6587 for more information.

The Healthy Learners Program, known nationally as the Primary Project from the Children’s Institute of Rochester, N.Y., pairs trained child associates with children in kindergarten through grade three. Students from USM/L-A’s social and behavioral sciences major work with children to help them reach their potential as young learners.

“With the increasing burdens on both children and teachers, we provide an important release: a place where children can both play and become better equipped to learn,” said Baskett.
