DURHAM – Durham Fire Department has taken delivery of a new $250,000 fire and rescue pumper truck. The purchase is the result of a Federal Fire Apparatus grant, which required $25,000 from the town.
In addition to fighting fires, the truck is equipped to help rescue crews extricate victims in motor vehicle accidents. The truck was put into service Saturday evening.
Its first call came within an hour of delivery. While on a test drive on Route 136, a deer ran in front of the truck, causing an estimated $200 damage. Fire Chief Bill St. Michel described it as a small dent and two “dings” in the paint. The identity of the driver was not released.
The deer died at the scene.
