RUMFORD – Pennacook Art Center’s exhibit for April is something entirely new – it features artists at work on their creations.

Titled the “Wet Paint Sale,” the unique display kicked off Friday night with about a dozen local artists at their easels painting or drawing while dozens of local people dropped by the Congress Street gallery to take a peek, said center manager Betsy Bell.

Art lovers will have a chance throughout the month to watch artists at work, she said.

One of those artists is Jan Descoteaux, a Rumford resident whose medium of choice is pen and pencil. Her depictions of rocks and water, leaves, flowers and other subjects are filled with tiny, precise pencil strokes. She also paints with acrylics and uses pen or colored pencils in her creations.

“I like the black and white, sometimes with just a little color,” she said. Her favorites are natural subjects. “I like the natural forms and the way water wears away rocks.”

She was one of the first exhibitors when Pennacook opened last year, Bell said.

Along with working artists, the center is also featuring spring paintings and other creations throughout the month. Each month the gallery focuses on a different subject, ranging from photographs taken in China, to paintings featuring fall colors and landscapes of local scenes.

The center, with its three rooms of artwork, is open most days until 5 p.m.
