WATERVILLE – Frederick R. Ebert, 62, of Smithfield, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, at Maine General Medical Center, Thayer Unit, in Waterville.

He was born in Lewiston on Dec. 24, 1942, the son of Frederick F. and Cecile (Toutain) Ebert. Fred graduated from Lewiston High School and went on to receive his bachelor of science degree from the University of Maine in 1966.

He met Janet Gill at college in 1963, and they married on Feb. 17, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wilton.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in education at the University of Maine in 1971.

He worked as a teacher, coach and athletic director during his 37-year teaching career, the majority of which was spent at Rockland District High School.

He retired with his wife to Smithfield, where he continued to enjoy fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, hitting golf balls from his backyard tee and his beloved Moosehead Lake area.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Janet Ebert, of Smithfield; his mother, Cecile; a sister, Linda Gilbert and husband, Michael, all of Bethel; two brothers-in-law, Anthony Gill and wife, Susan, of Chesterville, and Gregory Gill of Wilton; six special nieces and nephews, Edward, Heather, Melissa, Aaron, Amanda and Ryan.

He was predeceased by his father, Frederick F. Ebert, and an uncle, Lucien Toutain.
