SUMNER – Selectmen reviewed a draft of a proposed adult business ordinance at their meeting Tuesday.

Selectman Mark Silber said that although the revisions Selectman Thomas Standard had made to the draft were good, there were still “some aspects of this that would have to be much more clearly defined.”

As an example, Silber pointed to limits on how close adult businesses can be to other structures. The draft, which Standard got from the town of Livermore Falls, states that adult businesses must be 500 feet from homes, schools and churches, as well as other adult businesses. Silber asked whether it would be better to allow adult-oriented businesses to cluster together.

Standard said he will contact towns with similar ordinances to find out how they dealt with the spacing of the businesses.

Selectmen will also look into other aspects of the ordinance, including its effect on businesses such as video rental stores, adding a possible impact fee, and what kind of advertising might be allowed.

“We’ve got more work to do,” Selectman Clifford McNeil said.

In other business, Standard proposed keeping labeled samples of all major purchases of aggregate and hot top. He said this practice is recommended by the Maine Department of Transportation. No action was taken on the proposal.

Standard and Road Commissioner James Keach will present a plan for summer road work to selectmen at their next meeting.

Keach said he estimates that about $25,000 worth of damage was done to Sumner’s roads by the recent rainstorms.
