Dear Sun Spots: I enjoy your column very much. It’s one of my first things to read in the morning.
I’d appreciate it if you could please find me the address for Maury Povich, as I have a picture that belongs to him. I’d like to mail it to him. Thanking you in advance. Also, is he still married to Connie Chung? – Jackie Dumont, Lewiston.
Answer: The last contact address Sun Spots had for Povich was: Maury Povich, c/o “The Maury Show,” Hotel Pennsylvania, Grand Ballroom, 15 Penn Plaza, New York, NY 10001.
Regarding your second question, Sun Spots contacted the show and was told that he is still married to Connie Chung.
Dear Sun Spots: I ran across some old, old directions to make a coal or brick garden. It calls for liquid bluing, used 60-plus years ago by our grandmothers in their rinse water on laundry day. I can’t locate bluing. Do you know if it’s still on the market? – R.C., Farmington.
Answer: Check the laundry aisle in your local grocery story. Sun Spots has seen it frequently. It is also used to make crystal gardens and more. Perhaps you and other readers, especially parents during the upcoming spring break, might enjoy making the following chemical crystal garden with their children:
What You Need: 90 ml salt, 90 ml liquid bluing, 15 ml ammonia, an old pan, Vaseline, pieces of coal or charcoal briquettes, food coloring. What To Do: Find an old pan and grease the edges with Vaseline (this prevents the mixture from going over the edge). Place a few pieces of coal or charcoal briquettes in the pan. Mix the salt, liquid blueing, and ammonia together. Pour the salt mixture over the coal. Dab drops of food coloring on top of the coal (you can use a variety of colors). Watch your garden grow. Be patient!
What’s Going On? The crystals are formed by salt molecules joining together as the liquid evaporates into the air. The ammonia helps to speed the rate of evaporation.
Dear Sun Spots: I was recently watching WGME 13 news and noticed that there is a new weekend sports reporter. What happened to Barbara Barr? How long has this young, good-looking man been with the station? How old is he and is he single/married? Could you please tell me, along with other viewers, more about him? – S.L. Lewiston.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots believes it has located Barr at Channel 8 in Lancaster, Pa. However, Sun Spots has not received any response to several e-mails.
Regarding your second question about the good-looking man on WGME 13, Sun Spots corresponded with 25-year-old Adam Pellerin, who says he graduated from Suffolk University in 2002 with a degree in communications. He also played baseball for Suffolk for four years. Pellerin has been with WGME 13 for eight months and was a writer/producer at Fox 25 in Boston before coming to Portland.
“I’m single (haven’t met the right girl just yet.),” he says. “And as far as hobbies are concerned, I love going to the gym and playing sports, i.e., baseball, football, basketball.” Pellerin admits to being very competitive and like anyone else his age enjoys going out on the weekend.
