NEW YORK – The New York Yankees responded quickly following George Steinbrenner’s criticism. Alex Rodriguez, Tino Martinez and the Yankees broke out for 13 runs in a record-setting second inning on the way to a 19-8 rout of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
One day after Steinbrenner lashed out at his $200 million team for its 4-8 start, the Yankees quickly showed just how powerful they can be when the offense is clicking.
Rodriguez homered twice, doubled twice and finished with five hits. He drove in six runs and scored five times. Martinez hit a grand slam and knocked in six runs. Bernie Williams had three hits and Jason Giambi scored three runs, making a winner of Jaret Wright (2-1) despite his poor outing.
It all started in the second, New York’s biggest inning ever at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees sent 17 batters to the plate during an incredible outburst that lasted 34 minutes. They got 11 hits, including seven in a row, and 10 consecutive hitters reached safely.

Marlins 9, Nationals 4
WASHINGTON – As intimidating as facing Dontrelle Willis might be, that wasn’t what put an end to the Washington Nationals’ five-game streak. Instead, the first home loss by the capital’s new team came as a result of the Florida Marlins’ suddenly potent offense.
Willis extended his season-opening shutout streak to 24 innings before giving up three runs in the seventh, a half-inning after Florida batted around to build a lead en route to a 9-4 victory.
Cardinals 11, Pirates 1
PITTSBURGH – Mark Mulder, the Cardinals’ top offseason pickup, ended a nine-game winless streak by allowing two hits over eight innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1 Monday night.
Phillies 5, Mets 4
PHILADELPHIA – Randy Wolf took a shutout into the ninth inning, and Philadelphia’s bullpen barely held on for a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night.
Reds 7, Cubs 6
CINCINNATI – Not even four Cubs homers were enough for Kerry Wood in a city where he’s never lost. Adam Dunn hit two solo homers off Wood, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for an improbable 7-6 victory.
Athletics 8, Rangers 5
ARLINGTON, Texas – Dan Haren pitched six solid innings and cleanup hitter Erubiel Durazo snapped out of a season-long slump with his first extra-base hits in Oakland’s 8-5 win over the Texas Rangers.
