LEWISTON – U.S. Cellular is looking for permission to erect a 250-foot communications tower on Grove Street.

The issue comes before the Lewiston Board of Appeals at its meeting at 7 p.m. tonight. The conditional land use request is from Lewiston ComTelCo Partnership, which is a U.S. Cellular company.

Eric Cousens, land-use inspector in the Lewiston Department of Planning and Code Enforcement, said the new tower would have an array of 12 antennas on it. The structure would be fairly close to another tower on the property which is even taller, he said. The application proposes a 75-by-70-foot fenced area around the tower. It would also contain a 12-by-20-foot shelter building which could house items such as a generator.

Cousens said the proposed tower would be placed within a 100-square-foot area on a large parcel owned by Benoit and Lucina Beaulieu of 388 Grove St. in Lewiston.

Notifications to abutters were mailed on April 12. Although Cousens said he has not heard from any citizens regarding the request, he added that he expects some public comment at the meeting.

Two requests for modifications on residential zone setback requirements for garages are also on the appeals board’s agenda. They are related to single-family homes at 39 White St. and 199 Russell St.
