AUBURN – When Kit Warner of Greene showed up at Pet Quarters on April 9, she was trying to find out what her 5-month-old golden retriever had to “say.”

Pet psychic Jasmine Indra of Bath was in the house.

Indra became tuned into pet psychics after seeing an ad about 12 years ago when she was living in California. She immediately made an appointment for her cat.

At the time, she was a therapist for people, but soon decided she’d rather work with animals and began training.

“We all have the ability to do this,” Indra says. “It is just a matter of developing the skills and learning how to distinguish what’s in our own heads and what’s coming from the animal.”

Indra, who moved to Maine about a year ago, does a lot of her pet consultations by phone.

“It’s like tuning into a radio station, only without the range limitations,” she said.

She said phone calls work well, since the animals aren’t as distracted as they might be in a store or other unfamiliar setting.

Many people ask if their pets are happy, and she finds that most are. Some miss a previous owner, some grieve over their recently departed human. She said she’s connected with fish, birds, bunnies, horses, hamsters, dead pets and, once, even a whale.

When Warner asked about Skylar, her golden retriever, she said Indra “immediately picked up on his loving nature. He just has so much love to give.”

Warner was surprised to learn that her pet really knows he should go to the bathroom outside, but he gets lazy and has accidents. It doesn’t matter enough to him to care.

“I recognized that attitude in him exactly,” said Warner.

She was surprised to hear that although Skylar loves her male cat because of his funny personality, the dog feels dominated by the cat. “You’d have to be in my home to know that,” Warner said.

“All in all, it was interesting,” the pet owner said.
