Although it is hard trying to stomach the direction some politicians are taking our country, it is easy, at least, to deride the ultra-right-wing-dominated Republicans who, each day, seem to be shoving yet another outrageous law or some other form of injustice down our collective throats. Their blind allegiances to big corporations, their arrogance and corruption are easy to spot for anyone with a sense of justice paying even modest attention.

For Maine Democrats, it is not as easy to hold one of their own accountable, but it is important that they do.

While Rep. Tom Allen voted against the deceptively named Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act, Rep. Mike Michaud sided with the Republicans and a large number of Democrats who lacked the spine to stand up for working Americans and vote against it. With reference to this bill, Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., noted of his congressional colleagues, “They ought to be ashamed of themselves. This bill is a measure of how bought-off both parties are.”

Indeed, Democrats at large played tweedledee to the Republicans’ tweedledum on this monumental piece of legislation, but I am disappointed and ashamed that Mike Michaud was among them.

I let Rep. Michaud know what I thought of his selling out to the banking and credit industries.
