Today, I was informed of something I find very disturbing about the Maine Pine Tree card, also known as a TANF card.
This card can be used as an ATM/debit card. Recipients of this card can go to an ATM to get cash and spend it in any way they want, such as to bail themselves or a friend out of jail, or purchase drugs, alcohol or tobacco products. It really infuriates me.
My tax dollars could be used to bail a stranger out of jail and support other people’s bad habits. It is my understanding welfare was created so American families would not have to go without a home, food, clothing and personal hygiene items, and to pay bills, not to let someone accused of a crime back out on the streets and endanger the well-being of other human beings or to help them get their fix.
I understand not all Maine Pine Tree card recipients abuse the system, but it is a reality that many are. I am writing this because I find it hard to believe I am the only taxpaying citizen who didn’t know this information, and I am positive I am not the only person who opposes this and thinks something needs to be done.
