KITTERY – Gladys N. Clark, 95, of George Street, in Kittery, died on Monday, April 18, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Detroit, on Nov. 20, 1909, the daughter of Henry Rockwell and Achsia (Basford) Nichols. She attended local schools and furthered her education at Farmington State Normal School. She later earned a bachelor of science degree from Farmington State Teachers College.

She met and married her loving husband, James Albert Clark, who predeceased her in 1984.

A dedicated educator, she taught many students during her years of teaching. She taught school in all grades from 1929 until 1931 at the Town Farm School in Corinna. From 1931 to 1932, she taught in Newport, at the Gilman School and was employed for more than 24 years at the Horace Mitchell School in Kittery Point, teaching the third grade from 1949 until her retirement in 1974.

Active in her community, she supported the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum, Friends of Rice Public Library, she served as the vice president of the Women’s Club and was a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association for many years. She served as secretary for a while and on many committees including membership, personal growth and service, professional affairs, scholarship, research and served on the Iota Bulletin Committee.

She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking as well as travel, especially to Florida, and collecting coins, rocks and minerals.

She is survived by her son and his wife, David and Marcia Clark of Sabattus; grandchildren, Tracy Gosslin and her husband, Robert, of Lisbon, Deborah Clark of Sabattus, Stephen and Michelle Murchie of Kensington, Md., and Michael Clark of Lisbon; great-grandchildren, Lorra, Amanda, Justin and David; and her sister, Charlene Foster of Detroit.
