LEWISTON – Traffic lights at Main and Lincoln streets are expected to be out at least until today after a tractor-trailer knocked them over Wednesday afternoon.

For the second day, Lewiston police officers were at the intersection Thursday afternoon, controlling traffic through one of the busiest areas of the city.

Still, by 4:30 p.m., traffic was so congested along Lincoln and Oxford streets, dispatchers advised that emergency vehicles would be unable to pass through those areas.

The lights were knocked out Wednesday when a rig driven by 55-year-old Robert White of Turner drove through the intersection and into Laurier T. Raymond Park.

The crash took down the traffic pole controlling lights at the intersection and several street signs before the truck bounced into the park. There, it brushed a fountain and plowed into a brick wall.

White was not seriously hurt in the wreck. Police on Thursday said it is not likely he will be charged. Investigators were exploring the possibility that White may have fallen asleep moments before he crashed.

Early Thursday, city crews picked through the debris at Raymond Park in preparation for repairs.

The exact amount of damage was not yet known.
