CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Ross Cantera went 4-for-5 with six RBIs, including a round tripper, to assist the University of Maine in a squeaker, 13-12, over Boston College in baseball action on Friday.
The Black Bears (20-10) pulled out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, and BC responded with four runs in the bottom of the third frame. Designated hitter Greg Creek was perfect at the plate with four hits and a base on balls, while tallying four runs.
The Eagles (14-13) answered the Black Bears’ eight runs in the fifth inning with five runs in the home frame and another three in the sixth to pull the game to within one at 13-12.
Bates 7, Colby 5
WATERVILLE – Kyohei Yamada singled in the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth to lift Bates to a 7-5 win over Colby in NESCAC baseball action Friday.
The Mules (0-21) took a 2-1 lead through five innings, but Bates scored four times in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Brian Mahoney went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles for the Bobcats (6-10). Adam Taranto added two hits and two walks.

FARMINGTON – Freshman pitcher Jim Drummond earned his second victory of the season and went 3-for-7 with three RBIs as Elms College took a 9-8 victory in Game 1, but lost 4-0 in Game 2 against the University of Maine at Farmington in NAC baseball doubleheader action Friday.
The Beavers (6-13) narrowly missed a come-from-behind win in the opener. They battled back to score a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to come within one run of tying the score. Justin Quimby plated two runs on a double, while Eric Cummings and Corey Provencher each went 2-for-4.
Jacob Turner went 2-for-4, Corey Provencher went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Devin Gill went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the winning effort.
St. Joe’s 5, USM 3
GORHAM – Senior catcher Derek McIntosh mixed things up in the fifth inning to produce the go-ahead run and scored a safety as St. Joseph’s edged the University of Southern Maine 5-3 in baseball action Friday afternoon.
With the Monks (20-7) trailing 3-1 at the end of four, St. Joe’s loaded the bases ahead of a two-run single by sophomore second baseman Mark Clapp. McIntosh followed with a fielder’s choice, erasing Clapp at second and leaving runners at first and third with two outs.
Husson sweeps
BANGOR – Travis Tripp notched a three-hit complete game shutout in the opener and Chris McInnis tagged the ball twice in the nightcap as Husson picked up a pair of wins over Castleton State, 2-0 and 4-3, in doubleheader baseball action Friday.
The Braves (18-12) received excellent pitching from Tripp in the opener as he tossed five strikeouts and walked only one in seven innings of action. Justin Spencer had two hits and scored twice on RBIs from Sean Brawn and Kyle Mathieu for all the run production that was needed. In the nightcap, Castleton State struck first with a run in the second inning. But Husson responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs, and scored another in the third frame for the eventual game-winner.
Softball
Elms sweeps
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Junior pitcher Kristi Guzzo threw two-complete game efforts to extend Elms College’s winning streak to seven games, sweeping the University of Maine at Farmington, 3-1 and 3-2, in softball action Friday.
In Game 1, the Blazers (22-7) scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Tammie Tremblay had an RBI groundout, while sophomore short stop Jen LeDoux had an RBI single. LeDoux later came around to score on an infield error.
In Game 2, the Beavers (14-10) trailed 1-0 in the sixth, but rallied to tie the score when junior first baseman Mary Berry roped a one-out double and then scored on an RBI single to center by freshman Megan Goodrow.
With the score tied 1-1 after seven, the game went into extra innings.
The Beavers immediately took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth when junior center fielder Kristi Cochin scored on an infield error, but the Blazers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to notch the win.
