AUBURN – Edward Little erupted for six unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Justin Ciszewski belted a double on Friday. Brian Erickson followed with a single, driving in a pair of runs to chase away Skowhegan starter Matt Ouellette and send the Red Eddies (1-1) to a 11-3 win in their baseball home opener.
Ciszewski, Tyler Dorris, and Erickson each had a pair of runs in the win.
Derek Doucette picked up the win, coming on in relief of Adam Redmun in the first inning, while Brad Beauregard took the loss for the Indians (1-1).
Winthrop 2, Lisbon 0
WINTHROP – Chip Burnham and Corey Gillespie combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Winthrop to a 2-0 victory over Lisbon on Friday.
The Ramblers (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Tavis Hasenfus was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Burnham’s single. Winthrop added an insurance run in the sixth when Travis Frautten singled home Burnham.
Burnham escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth, and Gillespie came on with runners at second and third with one out in the sixth to seal the victory.
Lincoln 10, Oak Hill 3
NEWCASTLE – A pair of bunts and a single by Ryan Parlin plated both runners and broke a 3-3 tie, sending Lincoln Academy to a 10-3 win over Oak Hill in KVAC baseball action Friday.
Parlin was a one-man wrecking crew, adding a two-run homer in the third inning while picking up the win on the mound, going six innings before giving way to Patrick Howell.
The Eagles (1-0) added four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to effectively put the game out of reach in the season opener for both teams.
Oak Hill was led by Brian Bisson and Mike Eaton with a pair of hits, including a double each.
Monmouth 11, Jay 1
MONMOUTH – Scott Ogden twirled a complete game gem, striking out six and allowing one run as Monmouth cruised to an 11-1 win over MVC rival Jay in baseball action Friday.
The Tigers’ pitching lacked control as wild pitches and hit batters accounted for a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, giving the Mustangs all the runs they would need in the lopsided win. Ogden, Kyle Pelletier, Shane Kibler, and Ricky Pelletier each belted out a double in the win.
Waterville 9, Lewiston 8
LEWISTON – Waterville rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning behind a Antony Josephson double and a single from Issaic Josephson to propel the Purple Panthers (2-0) to a 9-8 win over Lewiston in the season opener for the Blue Devils.
The Devils looked to be in control with Luke Potter on the hill and holding a comfortable lead heading into the seventh before the Panther bats came to life.
Jeff Dutil picked up the win in relief of Josephson, with Andrew Boulanger absorbing the loss.
Oxford Hills 5, Brunswick 4
BRUNSWICK – Coasting with a five-run lead, Oxford Hills survived Brunswick’s late charge for a 5-4 triumph.
The eventual game-winner scored when Derek Varney walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Varney added a triple and Matt McDonnell had a double for the Vikings (2-0).
After starter Corey Saunders shut them down for five innings, the Dragons (1-1) scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings against reliever Ben Ryerson. Tom Prunick knocked in three of those runs with a pair of doubles. With Prunick on second as the tying run, Ryerson retired Justin Clark on a foul pop up for the final out.
