ST. LOUIS – Mark Mulder threw a 10-inning shutout, outpitching Roger Clemens in a marquee matchup and leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Houston Astros 1-0 Saturday.
Larry Walker’s RBI single off Brad Lidge in the 10th won it for the Cardinals, moving manager Tony La Russa into a tie with Joe McCarthy for fifth place on the career victories list at 2,125.
Clemens allowed four hits in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 0.32 and pushing his scoreless streak to 23 innings. But he was thwarted for the third straight time in his bid for his 330th win. He remains tied with Steve Carlton for ninth on the career list.
The Astros have not scored a run for Clemens in 22 innings. They did not even put a runner on third base in this one.
Pirates 4, Cubs 3
CHICAGO – Jason Bay hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and pinch-hitter Freddy Sanchez tripled home the go-ahead run, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Corey Patterson’s leadoff homer against Salomon Torres in the eighth gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead, but Patterson struck out against Jose Mesa with runners at the corners to end the game.
Mets 10, Nationals 5
NEW YORK – Jae Seo pitched six sharp innings after being called up from the minors earlier in the day, and rookie Victor Diaz had his first four-hit game to lead the New York Mets over the Washington Nationals 10-5.
The Mets scored all their runs in the fourth and fifth, batting around in both innings. New York has won 10 of 13 since opening the season with five straight losses.
Marlins 4, Reds 2
MIAMI – Dontrelle Willis won his fourth straight start to begin the season, and Juan Encarnacion’s two-run single helped the Florida Marlins to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Guillermo Mota struck out slumping Ken Griffey Jr. with runners at second and third to end it, preserving Florida’s eighth victory in 11 games. Griffey went 0-for-4, dropping his batting average to .200 with no homers and three RBIs. He’s hitless in his last 17 at-bats.
Giants 6, Brewers 2
SAN FRANCISCO – Brett Tomko pitched effectively into the seventh inning and hit a two-run single to give the slumping San Francisco Giants a much-needed win, 6-2 over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Giants had lost four of five games, scoring just 10 runs in that span, as they struggle early this season without injured slugger Barry Bonds. Bonds had fluid drained from his injured right knee earlier this week and expects to resume his rehabilitation next week.
Braves 11, Phillies 1
ATLANTA – Andruw Jones, mired in a 1-for-30 slump, hit a three-run homer in the first inning to send the Atlanta Braves to their third straight victory, 11-1 over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tim Hudson (2-0) had another strong outing, allowing one run in six innings.
Rockies 8, Dodgers 6
DENVER – Preston Wilson homered and drove in four runs, and Shawn Chacon got his first win of the season in the Colorado Rockies’ 8-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
