Dear Sun Spots: I read the recipe for S.O.S. in your recent column. My husband is looking for a recipe for the type he had in the service in the late ’50s. He remembers that it was made with hamburger, not chipped beef. Does anyone have this recipe? Also, does anyone know of a restaurant that serves S.O.S. made with hamburger? Thanks. Enjoy your column every day. – Frances C. Miller, No Town.
Answer: In addition to responses from readers you might want to try the following recipe located at www.allrecipes.com:
For a low-fat version of this recipe you might want to consider using an extra lean ground beef or ground turkey, using a low sodium beef broth, and skim or fat free milk.
Army SOS creamed ground beef. Ingredients: 1 pound ground beef, ¼ cup all-purpose flour, 1 cube beef bouillon, ¾ teaspoon salt, 1 pinch ground black pepper, 2¼ cups milk, ¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Method: Brown beef in a large skillet over medium high heat. Stir in flour, bouillon, salt and pepper. Sauté all together for about 5 minutes or until flour is absorbed. Gradually stir in milk and Worcestershire sauce. Bring all to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 to 10 minutes. Serve hot!
Dear Sun Spots: In the past some writers have asked for some yarn to give away. I have a box of different color yarn that I would like to give away. Please contact me at (207) 784-0042. – M.T., Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: Over the past few years, I have saved stamps from friends and family around the world. I am moving and need to find a home for them. I remember some time ago hearing of a charitable organization that stamps were being saved for and I have forgotten who or what. I believe it had something to do with children. Can you please help? – S. Rice, Litchfield.
Answer: The charitable organization Sun Spots previously listed has more than enough stamps to last for some time. However, you might consider sending your canceled postage stamps, foreign stamps or any uncanceled stamps from both the United States and foreign countries to: Sister Gilberte Boisvert, pm, Residence Ste. Claire 1 , 209 Lawrence St., Methuen, MA 01844. Please also ensure you leave a 1/3-inch border of paper around the stamp so that it is undamaged.
Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for part one of the Scarlett O’Hara miniseries movie, that came out on TV a few years ago. The title of the miniseries was simply “Scarlett.”
If anyone who has this series and would make me a copy of part one, or anyone who no longer wants their full set, I will reimburse the cost of the shipping. If you live in the Auburn/Lewiston area, I could pick it up. My name is Cat Lajoie and I can be reached at (207) 784-2143. – Cat Lajoie, No Town.
