ROCKLAND (AP) – Investigators planned to inspect a Camden man’s scuba gear to determine if it played a role in his drowning in Rockland Harbor.

Philip Brown, 51, and his wife, Ellen, were scuba diving Sunday when he failed to surface, according to the Coast Guard.

His body was found at 2:45 p.m. in 14 feet of water, said Marine Patrol Officer Brian Tolman. The medical examiner’s office said drowning was the cause of death.

“They had not had a lot of diving experience,” said Tolman. “They had taken some classes and done some diving but had not had a lot of time on their own.”

Tolman said the man’s diving gear was sent to the state police crime lab for examination. The accident remains under investigation.
